Pierwotnie muzeum nazwano Muzeum Cesarza Fryderyka na cześć cesarza Fryderyka III Hohenzollerna, ale w latach 50. XX wieku nazwę zmieniono, aby uczcić Wilhelma von Bode, pierwszego dyrektora muzeum. Budynek powstał według projektu niemieckiego architekta Ernsta von Ihne, a jego budowę ukończono w 1904 roku. Muzeum posiada kolekcję rzeźb, sztuki bizantyńskiej, monet i medali.
