故雅學者，希、羅故雅遺之學也。所𤔲者惟希臘、羅馬之文學、雅言， 旁及哲學、史學、攷遺、人類學、美術、神話學。

曩昔，歐人以希臘羅馬之故雅冠於羣藝，而爲學術之根柢，故凡教子必先之。

今之古典學，非特攻希臘、羅馬，環地中海者皆𤔲之。[一]

文學者，文獻經籍之學也，今曰古典學。故雅文學，𤔲希臘、拉丁文獻之學也。[二]是學肇乎文藝復興。時賢欲復先聖古道[三]，故廣求遺書，校讎定本。[四] 今之校讎通則，多興於此。若甲、乙二鈔本聚在，而乙源出於甲，則乙必非善本也，是安吉洛·波利齊亞諾一四八九年之論也。[五] 又「難者爲上」，讓·勒克萊爾一六九七年之說也。[五]
